Imagine this: what if Noah took liberty with the Ark’s blueprints? You remember Noah and the Ark don’t you? Noah and his family were the only ones righteous on the earth at the time. God preserved them and all the animals from the worldwide flood by telling him to build a big boat. God also gave him some instructions in its building. He had certain materials, dimensions, and design features to use. Just imagine Noah’s predicament if he decided to change some things. What would have Noah done if it sprung a leak because of not using the correct materials? Tell the elephants to start bailing? It would be hard to find a marina to make repairs in those days. What if the there was no room for the water buffaloes because of scaling back the design? Have them ride on the roof? How about if he ran out of food supplies? Put the hippos on a crash diet? Imagine if Noah thought to make part of the upper deck a sunroom. After all, wouldn’t that be more comfortable for the rattlesnakes? I don’t think they would agree with him when their pens started to flood. When God told Noah to build the Ark, He did not just leave Noah to figure things out on his own. Instead He gave him instructions that were necessary for completing the mission at hand. God knew what Noah would need and how to go about doing it because God knew what was ahead. Noah didn’t. He didn’t know how long it would last or really what he would have encountered along the way. If Noah would have changed some of God’s instructions, it could have meant that he was really jeopardizing the mission – even if it made sense to him at the time. In the same way, God’s instructions to us in the Bible are not just meaningless ramblings. God gave them to us for a reason. He knows what we need because He knows what lies ahead in our lives because He’s perfect. We, on the other hand, don’t. So, when we don’t understand why God wants us to do something, let’s not confuse His being perfect with our being perplexed! All we really need to understand is that God’s way is perfect and we need to follow it by faith. If we start to find ourselves in certain predicaments and our spiritual lives are springing leaks, there’s one thing that we cannot blame – God’s instructions to us. We, like Noah, will be doing pretty well if we would simply follow them. Let’s seek to learn and follow what God has given us in the Bible. We can only complete our mission by following them. |
